On March 28, 2009 thousands of volunteers gathered along the Texas waterways to participate in the largest statewide event to educate the public about the importance of our water resources. Trash Bash® is an annual citywide cleanup of bayous, rivers and bays coordinated by Houston-Galveston Area Council, which took place at 16 sites this year.
BPA was coordinating the clean up sites at Terry Hershey Park and under the supervision of Bruce Heiberg, BPA Projects Committee Chairman and Vice President of the BPA everything ran smoothly. More than 320 volunteers joined forces on a chilly but clear morning to beautify the banks of the upper part of Buffalo Bayou between Texas 6 and Beltway 8 by removing trash and debris. A small crew headed by Eric Ruckstuhl, the BPA Eyes on the Bayou Scout, also helped with "plant bash" removing invasive species near Langham Creek. Later, the workers were treated to complimentary hot dogs, chips, drinks and cookies.
We thank all the participants who donated their time to this year's cleanup. Members of area Boy and Girl Scout troops (209, 230, 337, 641, 673, 780, 1037, 1089, and 12109), along with high school students, donned work gloves to help out, including Memorial Mustang Outreach Bunch from Memorial High School, St. Thomas High School, and National Honor Society students from Stratford and Hastings high schools. Employees from Bovis Lend Lease/ BP, Cameron, CITGO Petroleum, KBIZ, KBR, Marcus Oil and Chemical, Pepper-Lawson Construction, Scientific Drilling International, and Shell Oil Company came out to help as well. Contributing to this year's cleanup were also the members of the Houston Canoe Club, Native Plant Society of Texas, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, LDS Church, and MMOB. Many families and other nature enthusiasts from all around Houston gathered at Terry Hershey Park to do their part in cleaning up the environment.
Thank you and hope to see you again next year!
