Greens Bayou Corridor Coalition
Organization Information
We have had our kick off meeting with National Park Service for the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance grant through National Park Service. This grant will allow us to prepare a master plan for the bayou. The next meeting will be a combined reach committee meeting on March 29, 2010. There will be a series of public meetings throughout the year as we progress.
Our website has gone live www.greensbayou.org. You can follow us now on Facebook and Twitter.
West Reach
We have received a grant from KBR and permission from HCFCD to have a clean up/replanting day along the upper reach of the bayou. We have submitted three dates in May for HCFCD to consider.
We have contracted with SWA to look at the feasibility of trail development from Willowbrook Mall and connecting to established trails in the Greenspoint area. We have a developer prepared to donate land.
North Reach
A conceptual design has been finalized for a 3.2 acre park that will promote an independent, healthy life style for senior citizens. A Texas Parks and Wildlife grant for $97,000 has been approved. Phase I will be complete by December 2010. Amenities will include water features, trails, exercise equipment, gardens, and exercise programming area.
We are moving forward with trail development that would extend trails currently at Wussow Park and connect upcoming recreational opportunities at Glen Forrest Basin and the new skateboard park the TIRZ will be constructing this year. This project will be funded through STEP funds.
South Reach
GBCC is working with Houston Parks Board on developing a newly acquired property into a canoe launch park. Eric Rukstuhl will report on some unusual facets of this site. The eventual goal is to create a nine-mile canoe trail with established put-ins and take-outs. We have been notified that we are receiving a grant from a major company in the area. We can make a more formal announcement after February 22.
We are meeting with stakeholders in the unincorporated areas of Harris County at the ship channel to pursue a feasibility study for a regional waste water treatment facility.
