WHERE: Herman Little Park Paddle Trail Launch Site. This is a new park under development located at 18,660 Casper Drive, Spring, Texas 77373.

DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of I-45 and Cypresswood Drive, go about a quarter mile east on Cypresswood Drive to Lockridge (this intersection is controlled by 4 way stop signs). Turn right (south) on Lockridge. Drive 20 mph for about a half mile and just after a bridge, turn right on Casper Drive. At about a half mile, the road turns right, however, enter the park site. There will be a sign with "Herman Little Park" on it. Park your vehicle and follow the signs to the launch site at Cypress Creek. Look for the green Bayou Preservation Association tent.

Please RSVP by noon Thursday, June 7th to bpa@bayoupreservation.org or call 713-529-6443 so that we can provide adequate supervision, equipment and refreshments.

As part of its "Project a Month" program, BPA seeks volunteers for upcoming events at two parks along Buffalo Bayou in January and February. On Saturday, January 29, BPA will work on Terry Hershey Park, specifically near the Highway 6 paddle trail launch, which will involve several activities: removal of invasive exotic plant species, canoe launch repair and maintenance and trash pick up.

On Saturday, February 26, BPA moves to Memorial Park, specifically the Woodway paddle trail launch on Buffalo Bayou near Woodway Drive and Loop 610, where the project encompasses trail maintenance and clean up of trash and debris near the water. Volunteers can park at a small parking lot on the south side of Woodway and west of Loop 610. Click here to see a map.

Both projects are scheduled from 9 a.m. - noon, with water, gloves and tools provided.

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose clothing (preferably long sleeves and long pants), closed-toed shoes or work boots and perhaps a visor or sunglasses if it is sunny.

Volunteers must sign a release form before participating in any activities at either of the parks. Anyone under age 18 must have a parent or a guardian sign the waiver form. Download form here (PDF).

Steve Hupp reports:

Eric Ruckstuhl and I had another great outing with Hermann Park Conservancy on Friday, 12/18/09! We guided about 20 active 6th graders in removing invasive plants while another 20 spread mulch under trees in another area. This was a community service project for these students. We removed Brazilian Vervain, Chinese Tallow Tree, a crape myrtle, a camphor tree, and several white mulberry. We also removed litter from natural areas and one island. 4 boys and I used cutting tools under my supervision and the balance pulled Brazilian Vervain by hand as the soil was the proper moisture to get the roots out. Eric provided guidance, identification, encouragement and herbicide spraying. We worked around (and avoided) poison ivy that was in fall color. Sam Molina of Hermann Park Conservancy recognized BPA as a partner in this project and asked me to provide a brief discussion of invasives. I also discussed the need to keep mulch away from the root flare. I gave them probably more than they wanted, and I also built on their science knowledge while I was at it. The 6th graders had a great time and learned about nature in a hands on way! They also had a lot of insightful questions that I was glad to be able to answer.
